What a website really costs in Malaysia

Ask five people what a website costs in Malaysia and you will get five confident answers between RM 0 and RM 50,000. All five are correct, because they are describing five different products that happen to share a name. Here is the honest map.
The four price bands
| Route | Upfront | Ongoing | What you actually get |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | RM 0 to RM 500 | RM 30 to RM 150 a month | A template you assemble yourself |
| Freelancer | RM 800 to RM 3,000 | Usually nothing | A template assembled for you |
| Small studio | RM 2,000 to RM 8,000 | RM 200 to RM 400 a month | Custom design and build |
| Big agency | RM 10,000 to RM 50,000+ | Retainers from RM 1,500 | Custom build plus process and meetings |
None of these is a scam and none is automatically right. The mistake is comparing them as if they were the same product at different markups.
The costs that hide under the quote
The advertised number is rarely the real number. When you compare quotes, ask about these four:
- Subscriptions that never end. A builder at RM 100 a month is RM 6,000 over five years, plus paid apps for reviews, bundles and popups that the platform sells separately. The cheap route is often the expensive route on a long enough timeline.
- Ownership. Some quotes are really rentals. If you stop paying, does the site survive? Can you take the code, the content and the domain and walk? If the answer is no, subtract that from the value.
- Copy and photos. Many quotes assume you supply finished text and images. If writing is not included, the site ships with placeholder energy and you pay again to fix it.
- Payment and delivery wiring. For stores: is FPX included? Couriers? Tracking emails? "Ecommerce ready" sometimes means a buy button and a prayer.
What actually moves the price
Three things, in order: custom features, copywriting and languages. A brochure site is cheap because it is static text. A store with a quiz, campaigns and a referral program costs more because it is software. Bilingual builds cost more because every sentence exists twice and both must sell. Everything else, animations, pages, revisions, moves the number less than people expect.
A fair quote tells you what "done" means. A dangerous quote leaves "done" open for negotiation after the money moves.
How to compare quotes without getting played
- Ask each vendor: what do I own when this is over? Get it in writing.
- Ask what happens to the total after two years, including subscriptions and apps.
- Ask who writes the words. Copy is half the site.
- Ask to see something they built that is live now, and click it on your phone.
- Ask how payment maps to progress. Deposits are normal. Full payment before you have seen anything is not.
Where we sit, for transparency
Valipen builds are custom: stores from RM 3,900, brand sites from RM 2,900, funnels from RM 1,800, care from RM 250 a month, while most agencies quote RM 8,000 to RM 20,000 for the same scope. A small deposit books the slot and the balance is due when the finished site is standing on a staging link in front of you. You own everything at handover. That is the whole model, and the free review is how you can test our judgment before spending a ringgit.
