Marketplace, Shopify or custom?
Every Malaysian brand climbs the same ladder: marketplace first, platform second, own store third. Each rung is right at a certain stage and expensive at the wrong one. Here is the whole ladder in one honest note.
Marketplaces: rented crowds
Shopee and TikTok Shop hand you traffic on day one, and take commission, vouchers and price war pressure in return. The deeper cost: the customer is theirs. You cannot email them, retarget them or build loyalty. Marketplaces are a brilliant place to start and a punishing place to stay, because you are renting a crowd, never building an audience.
Platforms: rented software
Shopify and friends give you a real storefront and take a monthly plan plus an app stack, typically RM 300 to RM 500 all in for Malaysian SMEs. You get your customer data back. What you do not get is distinctiveness: themes ship by the thousand, and your buyer has seen your layout wearing someone else's logo. Fine software, quietly expensive costume.
Custom: owned asset
A custom store is code, content and data you hold outright. No monthly platform rent, features written once instead of rented monthly, and a face no competitor can wear. The honest requirement: you need actual traffic and a brand people buy on story, otherwise you are polishing an empty shop. Custom is the rung for brands that already sell and are tired of splitting margin with software.

The ladder is not either or. A fragrance house we operate still sells on marketplaces while the custom store carries the brand, the margin and the customer list. Use rented crowds to feed an owned asset.
